The Special Service Program is committed to providing invaluable assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families, and relevant agencies by offering a range of resources and information. Our aim is to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities in Thornton Township. The program offers social activities and outings. We collaborate closely with local schools, community groups, and non-profit organizations to provide engaging, high-quality health and education initiatives for residents of all ages within our community. We are pleased to provide a number of other valuable services to residents, including:

Wheelchair Ramps, Medical Equipment & Home Modifications

Thornton Township provides medical equipment, constructs wheelchair ramps, and undertakes home modifications for individuals with physical disabilities. We take pride in constructing handicap ramps for residential homes. These ramps are designed to enhance accessibility, allowing individuals who struggle with stairs or require a smoother entry and exit from their homes to do so with ease. Our team meticulously plans each ramp to suit the residents’ needs, adhere to local building codes, ensure safety and durability, and maintain functionality under various weather conditions.

Christmas Care Program

Thornton Township’s Christmas Toy Giveaway and Food Basket Program hold immense value for families in need within the township’s community. Brightening the holidays for those less fortunate serves to underscore the positive impact that collaborative efforts can have in uplifting lives and nurturing a more compassionate society. With heartfelt dedication, the township distributes over 4,500 toys to children and provides 1,400 nutritious holiday food baskets annually through its December Christmas Care Program. This initiative embodies the spirit of giving, community care, unity, and compassion. By offering each child three individually wrapped gifts and families in need a nutritious holiday meal, the program generates moments of joy and enthusiasm while simultaneously easing the burdens faced by struggling families.

 Grant writing

Supervisor Tiffany A. Henyard and the Board of Trustees have empowered Thornton Township’s grant writers to proactively seek county, state, and federal grants. These grants play a pivotal role in financing numerous township programs that greatly benefit both residents and taxpayers. The dedicated grant writers at Thornton Township meticulously research, compose, and present proposals. Under the Henyard Administration’s leadership, the township has successfully secured over $1 million in fresh grant funds, which are channeled to bolster essential programs and services that the community relies upon.

Services Offered

Home handicap ramps

Thornton Township builds handicap ramps on several residential homes in the community. Wheelchair ramps are typically built in order to improve home accessibility for people who can’t use stairs or need a gentler, less stressful way to enter or leave their homes. A successful home accessibility project requires careful planning so that the ramp meets the home occupant’s needs, complies with local building requirements, is safe and sturdy, and is safe for use in all types of weather.
