About the Highway Department

The Thornton Township Highway Department is responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of all roadways and easements within the township’s unincorporated areas. Daily operations are managed by Highway Commissioner Antwon T. Russell, who ensures that roadways remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained throughout the year.

Highway Department staff are certified by the Illinois Department of Transportation in key areas including snow and ice control, flagging, signage, asphalt application, and drainage systems.

What We Do

Summer Operations

  • Redigging and cleaning drainage ditches
  • Replacing culverts and drainage infrastructure
  • Filling potholes and sealing road cracks
  • Maintaining areas adjacent to township roads
  • Supporting upkeep of senior transportation buses

Winter Operations

  • Snow removal from unincorporated roadways
  • De-icing of township roads and facilities
  • Ongoing maintenance of department vehicles
  • Upkeep of township facilities and equipment
