About Senior Services
The Thornton Township Board of Trustees has expanded the Senior Services Department to include a wide range of programs and special events. The department is committed to helping township seniors remain socially and intellectually engaged, with opportunities that support a higher quality of life.
Programs & Services
Senior Hot Lunch Program
The Senior Hot Lunch Program offers nutritious meals in a friendly, social environment. Seniors can enjoy a warm meal and connect with others in their community.

Thornton Assistance Program (TAP) Lawn Care
TAP provides weekly lawn care from May through October to eligible seniors aged 60 and older who are on fixed incomes with no able-bodied individuals in the household. To apply, call (708) 596-6040 Ext. 4007.
Illinois Mature Driver 55 Alive
Defensive driving classes for residents 55+ that may qualify participants for up to 15% off auto insurance premiums. Call or visit one of our locations to find out when the next class will be held.
Super Seniors — Driver’s License Renewal
In partnership with the Illinois Secretary of State, this program offers convenient driver’s license renewal including Rules of the Road instruction and a vision-screening exam. ID cards available for $20 (free and non-expiring for residents 65+).
Benefit Access Program
We assist seniors with the Illinois Department on Aging Benefit Access Program, which provides free transit rides, license plate discounts, and other benefits for qualifying seniors and persons with disabilities. Assistance available year-round at all three locations.
Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP)
A free statewide health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging. SHIP provides comparisons of supplemental and long-term care insurance policies and helps with filing insurance papers.
Community Events
Ongoing programs include weekly exercise classes, monthly Tech Savvy workshops, Ice Cream Social (July), Spirit of Chicago Senior Cruise (September), Boots on the Ground (October), and the Senior Services Holiday Party (December).
