Special Services
Coordinating specialized programs and services for residents with unique needs across Thornton Township.
About Special Services
The Special Service Program is committed to providing invaluable assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families, and relevant agencies by offering a range of resources and information. Our aim is to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities in Thornton Township through social activities, home modifications, community events, and grant-funded programs.
Programs & Services
Home Handicap Ramps
Thornton Township builds handicap ramps on residential homes throughout the community. Each ramp is carefully planned to meet the home occupant’s needs, comply with local building requirements, and remain safe in all weather conditions — improving home accessibility for people who can’t use stairs.
Christmas Care Program
Each December, Thornton Township distributes more than 4,500 toys and 1,400 holiday food baskets to residents across the community. Children receive three individually wrapped gifts, and families receive a nutritious holiday meal — creating meaningful experiences while easing financial burdens for those facing hardship.
Grant Writing
Our grant writing team actively pursues county, state, and federal grants to fund essential services. Through diligent research and skilled proposal writing, the team has successfully secured over $1 million in new grant funding, reinvested directly into programs that enhance the lives of township residents.
Community Collaboration
We collaborate closely with local schools, community groups, and non-profit organizations to provide engaging, high-quality health and education initiatives for residents of all ages, connecting them with the right resources throughout the community.
